This is a remix of my 1984 song “Underwatertown.” Those of you who own the Down in Flames set will already know this song.

Not long ago I listened to the released recording and thought maybe I used the wrong vocal pass. I think that’s true. My vocal on the original release sounds rather subdued to me now.

Yesterday recording engineer Ken McGee here in Asbury Park helped me do a remix using a more emotional vocal performance from the original sessions.

“The water’s coming, rushing down the street!”

The best I've heard from Steve Earle in a while. The songs have a subtler, earthier tone, tastefully rendered in authentic sounding country/blues/bluegrass stylings. 'J.T' reminds of earlier records like 'Feel Alright' or 'Train a Comin'. Deep grief, love and compassion is felt on the final track, the only composition from Steve, seemingly written for his son. The rest, composed by JT, do confirm what a great songwriter he really was. tideracer

John Drumbo French from Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band worked with Thompson on two albums along with Fred Frith and Henry Kaiser. Those two French, Frith, Kaiser and Thompson albums led me to this. Also, Richard Thompson taught Hugh Cornwell (of The Stranglers) how to play the bass guitar in a band when they were both at the same school (Emil and The Detectives?).
