It's All in the Game

from Don't Look Down, Pollyanna by Steve Forbert

about

Produced by Garry Tallent 1995; Written by Carl Sigman & Charles Dawes

Mike: OK. Here's some info on GAME:

"It's All in the Game" was a 1958 hit for Tommy Edwards. Carl Sigman composed the lyrics in 1951 to a wordless 1911 composition entitled "Melody in A Major," written by Charles Dawes, later Vice President of the United States under Calvin Coolidge. It is the only #1 pop single to have been cowritten by a U.S. Vice President.

The song has become a pop standard, with cover versions by dozens of artists, some of which have been minor hit singles.

Edwards' song ranked at #38 on Billboard's All Time Top 100.

SF: Yeah, the birth of this classic is interesting, isn't it? I wonder how Carl Sigman came across the music forty years later. Four decades that, for what it's worth, probably separated him from 1911 much more than we feel separated from 1969.

We still hear COME TOGETHER every other day via oldies stations and classic rock stations and remastered re-issues, etc.

Mike: Yeah...my two kids listen to the Please, Please Me album every day...it's almost 50 years old. That's crazy when you think about it. I can tell you that I wasn't listening to anything from 1927 when I was 5 years old in 1977. Digging up that instrumental in 1951 must have been a chore!

SF: Judging by how good a song it is, I'd say the instrumental found its way to Carl Sigman on it's own---or maybe with some help from, uh, Cupid.
