THE OIL SONG
Hey, the captain's now free and his case it is closed,
The Exxon Valdez wrecked itself I suppose;
What's left of the life in the Prince William Sound
Might not condone what our court of law found!
And it’s oil! oil!
Creeping in the sea!
Don’t buy it at the station,
You can get it now for free,
Just come on down to the shoreline
Where the water used to be.
Registered in through Liberian doors,
Passin' the Shetlands near Scotland's cold shores,
A single-hulled ship with its engine broke down
Drifted five hours and then ran aground
Right where the wildlife preserve chanced to be
And twenty million more gallons got free!
But don't worry, folks, "It's all light crude!," they did say,
“It'll prob'ly break up and be gone right away!”
We're pumpin' out petrol, no matter what cost,
Now that eleven men's lives have been lost
The price is as high as rig workers can pay—
Payin' the price for the U.S. of A.
A deepwater rig called Horizon went down,
No way to seal off its pipe could be found;
120 million plus gallons away!
Panama City towards Galveston Bay,
Eighty-five days was the span of that leak,
Eighty-five days made for 12 greasy weeks;
What hit the surface was one thing I guess,
What’s underneath could take years to assess
And it's oil, oil,
Creepin' in the sea,
Don't buy it at the station,
You can get it now for free,
Just come on down to the shoreline
Where the water used to be.
The isle of Mauritius is suffering today, Expecting the worst, so the people there say,
A Japanese oil ship is leaking offshore,
A 1000 metric ton crisis outpour!
A coral reef, a shoreline, a mangrove lagoon Will not be like what they were anytime soon
‘Cause it's oil, oil,
Creepin' in the sea,
Don't buy it at the station,
You can get it now for free,
Just come on down to the shoreline
Where the water used to be.

John Drumbo French from Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band worked with Thompson on two albums along with Fred Frith and Henry Kaiser.
Those two French, Frith, Kaiser and Thompson albums led me to this.
Also, Richard Thompson taught Hugh Cornwell (of The Stranglers) how to play the bass guitar in a band when they were both at the same school (Emil and The Detectives?).
With a career spanning 50 years and playing with two of my heroes (French and Cornwell) Thompson has produced a fascinating EP. yellowcakeuf6
